In the ninth session, Prof. Andriani Kusumawati, S.Sos., M.Si., DBA of Universitas Brawijaya delivered a theme about “Social Innovation and Business Models For Regenerative Tourism” and moderated by Wildan Pratama Avian S.A.B., M.A.B. as a lecturer at Universitas Diponegoro. Prof. Andriani introduced a transformative vision for the future of global tourism. She emphasized the urgent need to shift from traditional and sustainable tourism models toward regenerative tourism where a paradigm not only minimizes harm but also actively restores ecosystems, empowers local communities, and enhances cultural heritage.

Prof. Andriani also highlighted the role of regenerative tourism in addressing systemic challenges and fostering long-term positive outcomes, positioning it as a natural extension of social innovation. This approach aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and offers a holistic, community-centered model of travel that benefits both people and the planet.

According to Prof. Andriani, the key principles of regenerative tourism include environmental restoration, cultural preservation, value co-creation, and community empowerment. Unlike conventional tourism, which often prioritizes profit at the expense of nature and local well-being, regenerative tourism seeks to make destinations healthier, more resilient, and more vibrant than before. She also shared a comprehensive business plan and strategic steps to realize this vision — involving local participation, equitable leadership structures, and the use of innovative technology to ensure long-term sustainability and impact.

In conclusion, the session provided a comprehensive understanding of how social innovation and business models can drive the transition toward regenerative tourism. Prof. Andriani’s insights inspired participants to rethink tourism not just as an economic activity, but as a collaborative force for ecological renewal, cultural vitality, and inclusive community development, paving the way for a more equitable and regenerative future in global travel.
