Semarang, Indonesia \u2014 4 September 2025.<\/strong> The Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), through its IGNITE \u2013 Inclusive Green Innovation, Transformation & Entrepreneurship<\/strong> program and with support from the World Class University (WCU) Program \u2013 Postdoc International Scheme<\/strong>, convened an international workshop titled \u201cContent Analysis Methodology in Tourism & Business Research.\u201d<\/strong> Delivered online via Zoom, the session featured Prof. Mamoon Allan, Ph.D<\/strong>, Professor of Tourism at The University of Jordan<\/strong> (Scopus h-index 12; Google Scholar h-index 20).<\/p>\n

The event opened with remarks from Dr. Teguh Yuwono, M.Pol.Admin.<\/strong>, Dean of FISIP UNDIP<\/strong>, with acknowledgments to Prof. Bulan Prabawani<\/strong>, Chief of IGNITE<\/strong>. The workshop was moderated by Anis Qomariah<\/strong> (Department of Business Administration, FISIP UNDIP).
\nA total of 52 participants<\/strong> attended, including undergraduate (S-1) and master\u2019s (S-2) Business Administration students from UNDIP<\/strong>, alongside individual attendees from Sichuan University (China)<\/strong> and Zakariya University, Multan (Pakistan)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Prof. Allan outlined core foundations of qualitative content analysis (QCA)<\/strong>\u2014from classic definitions and Krippendorff\u2019s conceptual framework<\/strong> to practical distinctions between qualitative and quantitative content analysis<\/strong>, sampling logics, and outputs. He emphasized systematic yet flexible coding<\/strong> (inductive, deductive, or combined), transparent codebook development<\/strong>, and trustworthiness<\/strong> (e.g., intercoder reliability, audit trails, reflexivity, and ethical data use). He also surveyed tools commonly used in QCA<\/strong>, including NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA, and Dedoose<\/strong>, and mapped major data sources<\/strong> relevant to tourism and business studies (interviews\/focus groups, reports, policy and corporate documents, news and web content, social media posts).<\/p>\n

Linking method to domain, Prof. Allan reviewed applications in tourism and hospitality<\/strong>\u2014such as destination image analysis<\/strong>, online review analysis<\/strong> (e.g., guest satisfaction and service gaps), and evaluations of sustainability\/CSR communication<\/strong>\u2014and demonstrated a step-by-step QCA workflow<\/strong> using Bali travel blogs<\/strong> (scoping, purposeful sampling, inductive coding, code refinement, theme development, interpretation, and implications for branding). He also referenced Miles & Huberman\u2019s<\/strong> three-stage logic (data reduction, data display, and drawing\/verifying conclusions) to structure analysis and reporting.<\/p>\n

\u201cContent analysis is fundamental to producing credible, actionable research<\/em><\/strong>,<\/strong>\u201d said Dr. Teguh Yuwono<\/strong>. \u201cToday\u2019s workshop strengthens our capacity to analyze policy and corporate documents, user-generated content, and performance reports that inform both scholarship and practice.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIGNITE\u2019s mission is to bridge rigorous research with real-world outcomes<\/em><\/strong>,<\/strong>\u201d added Prof. Bulan Prabawani<\/strong>. \u201cBy advancing methodological skills in tourism and business studies, we help our faculty and students contribute solutions for inclusive and green transformation<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although this edition took place online, UNDIP organizers expressed their intent to host Prof. Allan for an on-campus visit in Semarang<\/strong> in the near future to tour the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and engage with faculty and students<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
